- The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was created to increase access to health care, coverage, control costs, and improve quality.
- It is incredibly important for businesses, both large and small, to understand their obligations and keep current with updates on the ACA.

Diabetes: Identifying the Problem, Education, Prevention, Management & Treatment
- The prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes in the Native American population is staggering. About 17% of all Native Americans live with Type 2 Diabetes, while 9 out of 10 are unaware they have diabetes.
- The panel will note the difference between Type 1 and 2 Diabetes and address the causes of Type 2 Diabetes and the prevalence of the disease in Indian Country.
- This panel will further educate you about complications and co-occurrences that can arise from inadequate management of diabetes including cardiovascular events, renal disease, retinopathies, neuropathies, and amputations.
- Learn which management programs, technologies and treatments have shown to be effective.
- The panel will note certain lifestyle changes that can help prevent and treat the disease as well as certain lifestyle choices that may make the disease worse, such as alcohol consumption.
- Review different technologies and management devices that help people with diabetes manage their disease and enjoy life.

Mental Health: Suicide, Awareness Programs, and Recommended Steps
- Native Americans have the highest suicide rates of any other population group in the U.S.
- This panel will focus on understanding mental health and address common causes that lead to the feeling of hopelessness.
- Professionals in the field will highlight successful awareness and education programs that can help community members understand mental health and help decrease suicide rates. They will also explain how to implement the Comprehensive Suicide Care Model.
- Discuss what mental health programs are available on the federal level and what tools and recommended steps healthcare organizations can take to create programs.
- Native Americans experience more traumatic events than any other ethnic or racial group in the U.S.
- Experts will discuss what Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is and how to screen for it.
- PTSD has been linked to comorbidities in mental and physical health.
- Approaches for addressing PTSD, including programs for Veterans, will be discussed.

Substance Abuse: Drugs, Alcohol and Opioids in Native America
- Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis are diseases that develop from alcoholism and are among the leading causes of death among Native Americans, and about 18.3% of Native Americans aged 12 and older are current users of illicit drugs.
- This panel will address some of the major causes and effects of Native Americans’ behavioral health including increasing substance abuse.
- Hear how poverty, unemployment, and historical trauma can lead to drug and alcohol abuse.
- Review various prevention and support programs that some tribes have used in the past as well as how these types of programs can be implemented.
- Clinicians will provide success stories about patients who have overcome these addictions.
- Address the role of law enforcement in dismantling drug trafficking organizations and the funding that certain areas have been given by the ONDCP to do so.
- Experts will explain who is at greatest risk for misuse and the new guidelines recently initiated to support Secretary Burwell’s initiative to decrease opioid abuse in our country.
- Evidence Based Practice indicates the most important measures are to provide non-opioid therapy first for chronic pain, selecting the lowest effective dose, and shortest duration possible with frequent follow-ups, and providers exercising caution when prescribing opioids.

Adolescent Mental Health and Substance Abuse
- Mental health education and promotion is an important topic to address within the Native American community that requires different interventions than other communities.
- Teen substance abuse and addiction is 2-3 times higher than the national average, with native users starting at a significantly lower age than non-native users.
- The substances most commonly used include methamphetamine, alcohol, oxycodone, marijuana, and heroin.
- Adolescent substance use in American Indian communities contributes to a variety of mental health and other issues, including violence, delinquency, and mortality from suicide, drug or alcohol abuse; early intervention is required to prevent such complications.
- Experts will provide information regarding warning signs, risk factors, consequences of use and new initiatives and programs being implemented to decrease this growing issue.
